Wilhelm Reich was born on March 24, 1897, in Dobzau, in what is now Ukraine, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After surviving World War I, he enrolled in medicine at the University of Vienna, where he came under the direct influence of Sigmund Freud and became one of the most promising psychoanalysts of his generation — eventually serving as Freud’s first clinical assistant.

Reich’s early work focused on the relationship between emotional repression, the body, and neurosis.
